In January 1990, Brenda discharged herself from the Marine Corps following an accident that happened to her son. Within a few years, just before the birth of their daughter Jesse, the couple got separated. It was rumoured that Neil was cheating on Brenda.

Zachary was not blind by birth. A tragic incident happened to him when he was only 4 months old. Zach’s biological father, Neil, was giving a bath to him when the baby slipped from his hand and landed on the bathtub on his head.

Hearing the news, Brenda was forced to discharge from his job to look after the baby. As a consequence of these incidents, the baby was miraculously saved but became blind in one eye for the whole life. Later it was discovered that the boy suffered a traumatic brain injury when he developed some respiratory problem.

This incident motivated his parents to build Treasure House, an Arizona housing services facility for young individuals with cognitive challenges.
